On making Visual Studio a part of Windows

Posted by: Brian Eastwood on June 26, 2006 DIGG
Recently Jeroen van den Bos wrote a blog entry advocating that Visual Studio come standard with Windows. Many of today's programmers got their start by typing BASIC into their Commodore 64s, van den Bos writes here, and nowadays Linux users have the ability to develop and modify their systems. Make the already-free Visual Studio Express Edition a part of Windows, van dan Bos argues, and more causal programmers will turn into skilled software developers a few years down the road.

On the other hand, naysayers point out two large hurdles -- the possibility of a European Union antitrust suit (much like the row over IE) and giving "Joe User" the ability to program to the Windows Manager or File System level.

Quite different reality

Posted by: Eduardo Miranda on July 06, 2006 in response to Message #212178
With our commodores 64 we HAVE to know some Basic programming even to play a simple game. Today we live in a different paradigm: PC users profiles are different and more vast, there are a wide range of software offer. But if a user wants to program it’s own application he can download and install VS Express. I believe that any user who is willing to write a piece of code is experience enough to do that.
