Microsoft Office Open XML Document Formats Sent to ECMA
Microsoft has submitted the Office Open XML format, which will be implemented in Office 12, to the ECMA International board for standardization. They then plan to submit the results from ECMA to ISO for international standardization.
In an interview with Robert Scoble, Jean Paoli was asked if the Office Open XML formats are really open.Yes, and the Standardization process will make this even more clear as we work with the committee members. Ecma International is a very respected organization and is extremely serious about openness in the standards they create and support. The technical committee that will oversee it under Ecma International is open to anyone who is an Ecma member. By working with participating companies like Apple , Barclays Capital, BP, the British Library, Essilor, Intel, NextPage, StatOil and Toshiba and other Ecma members who would want to participate, we hope to create an open standard that will enable customers, technology providers and developers around the globe to work with the Office Open XML formats without barriers, with or without Microsoft products. While many have speculated on the reasons for this move towards standardization of the Office 12 formats, Mr. Paoli insists that the agenda is simply to improve widespread support for the Office Open XML formats.It takes more than Microsoft to really win the trust of millions of customers for a standard technology. Is this different from Open Document Format?
Microsoft, for the longest time, had shown no intention of supporting the Open Document Format that many other software providers have. And now they come out with this Open XML Document Format. Any speculations to why this is?
