New Cw (C-Omega) Compiler Released

Microsoft Research has released a compiler for the Cw (C-Omega) language. The Cw language is an experimental extension of the C# language that incorporates support for concurrency and processing relational and semi-structured data. Using Cw a developer can declaratively create asynchronous methods with dependencies on the execution of other methods.

Concurrency is such an important part of both client and server based programming that the Cw team is incorporating the support directly into the language. Using new keywords you can declaratively construct methods that are executed asynchronously. In that same method declaration you can define a series of methods which must be executed before that method executes. This is called a “chord”. Here is an example from the Cw Overview document that shows an synchronous Get() method that requires the execution of an asynchronous Put() to execute:

In addition to the concurrency support, Cw adds support for XML based data by implementing XPath like features as part of the language including support for Filters, Descendants, and Query-By-Type. Also from the Cw Overview, here is an example of working with XML data and how similar it is to XQuery.
